I have done this on a phase II 2.9V6 it is possible to remove the steering rack without taking of the servo - you do need to take off some of the green fluid pipes which are connected to the steering rack to give you the angle to twist and turn it enough so it will come out of the wheel arch.

I replaced one on DSOL last year, because it was leaking out of both ends. Steering is smooth but responsive. On DSEL, I have a little bit of oversteer, even when going straight.
