WebPlaying middle D with only the palm key produces a much brighter, less "stuffy" sound, but is often very put of tune (very flat on my horn). Try playing middle D the normal way (fingers 1-6, octave key) but then add the palm D key as well. It's a more cumbersome fingering, but for a very bright D that is not that hard to tune it works well.

If the pitch is too high or sharp, pull your mouthpiece position out on the cork a little. Again, only a quarter of an inch at a time.
