There is a high probability that your csh is symlinked to the tcsh, so please read the tcsh manual (the startup section) - there are other startup files, which the tcsh tries to load (not only the .cshrc ). Basically this hanging behavior might mean, that the shell is trying to access a machine, which is not accessible from your environment.
