It is safe, but there are much better alternatives, If you are looking for more protection features though, Avast One has a lot of them open for free.

It continuously returns excellent results at independent lab tests, is not as expensive as its competitors, and includes useful security features. During our in-house tests, Bitdefender showed excellent malware detection rates. WebKaspersky Security Cloud Free still offers the most comprehensive protection for a free AV. Malwarebytes and Norton don't offer a free AV, only second opinion manual scanners. It's unclear if Sophos will continue to offer a free AV to new users. When available, it offered decent protection, but was very resource heavy.
